THE BIG PICTURE

A place to explore
individual & family coverage.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) established the Health Insurance Marketplace as a way to shop for health insurance. Some states use HealthCare.gov; others run their own Marketplace. Marketplace coverage is distinct from Medicare.

WHAT PLANS COVER

A foundation for everyday care.

Marketplace plans include essential health benefits, such as doctor visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, maternity care and mental health services.

That does not mean every service or prescription is covered without cost. Specific benefits, provider networks, covered-drug lists and your share of expenses need a closer look.

WHAT TO CHECK

The details behind the plan.

  • Are the doctors and hospitals you want in the network?
  • How does the plan cover your prescriptions and pharmacies?
  • Do referrals or other plan rules affect how you receive care?

Use the current plan documents to confirm details before making a choice.

COMPARE THE WHOLE PICTURE

Four costs worth understanding.

Monthly premium
What you pay to keep coverage, even in a month when you do not use care.
Deductible
What you pay for certain covered services before the plan begins to share those costs. Some services are covered before it is met.
Copays & coinsurance
A fixed amount or a percentage you pay for covered care, depending on the service and plan.
Out-of-pocket limit
A yearly cap on what you pay for covered, in-network care. Premiums, non-covered services and out-of-network costs do not count toward this limit.

Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum categories describe how costs are shared—not the quality of care. A Marketplace “Gold” category is separate from the HUGS Gold service family.

INFORMATION TO HELP YOU PREPARE

Prepare your Marketplace questions

Bring your questions. Build your understanding.

  1. Start with your priorities.

Organize the coverage questions you want explained, including care access and costs. Keep personal details out of this preview.

  2. Check official information.

Use the Marketplace serving your state and current plan documents to check enrollment requirements and available coverage. HUGS ACA assistance is not currently available.

  3. Understand the next step.

Review current plan information and the official application process before deciding whether to proceed. Reading this page does not enroll you or change your coverage.

TIMING & FINANCIAL HELP

Two questions.
Separate answers.

When you can enroll and whether financial help is available are different questions. Neither is determined by reading this page.

WHEN CAN I ENROLL?

Check the enrollment window.

Open Enrollment is the regular period to enroll in Marketplace coverage. Outside that window, certain life changes—such as losing qualifying coverage, moving or getting married—may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.

Conditions and deadlines apply. Confirm current dates and requirements with the Marketplace serving your state; a life change alone does not confirm eligibility.

COULD FINANCIAL HELP APPLY?

Let the application establish it.

Help with premiums and certain out-of-pocket costs may be available, subject to the applicable rules. Household information and expected income for the coverage year matter.

An official Marketplace application determines the assistance available. This page does not calculate a subsidy, promise a lower premium or collect financial details.
